Castries, St. Lucia--This is the first of two visits to the southernmost islands in the Lesser Antilles, and places we've never visited before.

St. Mark House overlooking Sirena--a colonial home where descendants are still living, sits high above the harbor.

A wraparound porch allowed us to share punch and banana chips with our guides.

La Toc Battery--a 19th Century British gun emplacement overlooking the entrance to the Castries harbor. It was purchased more than 30 years ago by the lady in the pink shirt--who seemed to be in her late seventies or more. She has made her life work restoring the battery, and has created a mini museum in the shell storage areas. The cannon was retrieved from down the hill with a D9 Caterpillar, which blew its head gasket in the effort. Plenty of restoration still to be done.

On to Anse La Raye, a fishing village, with a child's playground.

The streets of Anse La Raye, where we purchased banana ketchup!

Housing on St. Lucia comes in many varieties--from St. Mark House (above) to
colorful hillside houses on stilts.

And a big contrast in town, as well.

The Chinese government has put huge investment here in roads, bridges, and infrastructure. We found St. Lucia a delight, and would like to return.
